SISTER KAREN LARKINS, CSJ, 56, died Monday, March 17, in Magee Women’s Hospital in her 22nd year as a Sister of St. Joseph of Baden. The daughter of the late John A. and Margaret Putz Larkins, Sister Karen entered the Congregation from St. James Parish, Ferndale, MI, in 1986. She served as Campus Minister at California University of Pennsylvania, California, PA from 1989–1994.
After ministering as Pastoral Associate at Good Samaritan Parish, Ambridge, and providing office support through Kelly Services, Sister Karen served as Campus Services Manager at Lake Forest Graduate School of Management, Schaumburg, IL from 1997–2001. During that time she also coordinated Ministers of Care at Queen of the Rosary Parish in Elk Grove Village, IL. Sister Karen has been Campus Minister / Pastoral Associate at St. Thomas More University Parish in Indiana, PA. from 2001 until the present.
While her quick smile and keen sense of humor warmly engaged others, Sr. Karen’s gentle, quiet presence reflected her deep desire that God be the center of her life.
Sr. Karen is survived by two sisters: Annette (Jerry) Lindley, Algonquin, IL; and Clarice (Steve) Rybicki, Washington, MI; and two brothers: Robert (Patricia) Larkins, Three Rivers, MI; and Donald (Adrienne) Larkins, Warren, MI, nieces and nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews, and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Baden. Friends will be received Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 11:00–3:30 p.m. at the Motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Baden. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel. Burial will follow in the Sisters’ Cemetery on the Motherhouse grounds. Donations in the name of Sister Karen may be sent to the Sisters of St. Joseph Memorial Fund, St. Joseph Convent, 1020 State Street, Baden, PA 15005.
