SISTER MARY EVELYN HANNAN, CSJ, 86, died Monday, July 9, in Villa St. Joseph, Baden, in her 68th year as a Sister of St. Joseph. The daughter of the late William S. and Mary E. Stewart Hannan, Sister Mary Evelyn entered the Congregation from Holy Rosary Parish in 1939.

Sister ministered as an educator for more than 30 years in the Pittsburgh and Greensburg Dioceses. During this time she served as principal at St. Mary School, New Castle, at the former St. John’s High School, Uniontown, and at St. Joseph High School, Natrona Heights. From 1981–1984, Sister Mary Evelyn served as Director of Secondary School Catechesis for the Pittsburgh Diocese. She continued her ministry of teaching at Pontifical College Josephinum, Columbus, OH, from 1984–89. She then served as Professor and Lecturer at St. Vincent Seminary in Latrobe, PA and as Latin Instructor at St. Paul Seminary, Pittsburgh. During her years of ministry Sister Mary Evelyn directed retreats and provided spiritual direction. Sister also published The Qualities and Competencies of the Catechist, Prayer Program, an NCEA Publication in 1983, and worked as translator from Latin into English for several documents in three dioceses. Sr. Mary Evelyn is survived by nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Baden. Friends will be received Sunday from 1–8 p.m. and Monday from 11:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at the Motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Baden. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Monday at 4:00 p.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel. Burial will follow in the Sisters’ Cemetery on the Motherhouse grounds.
