SISTER MARY FIDES RUPPEL, CSJ, 87, died Wednesday, July 4th, at the Motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Baden in her 70th year as a member of the Congregation. The daughter of Bernard and Sophia Regan Ruppel, Sister entered the Congregation from St. Catherine of Siena, Beechview.
For more than 30 years Sister Mary Fides ministered as a teacher in the Altoona/Johnstown, Greensburg, and Pittsburgh Dioceses. During this time Sister taught at Bishop McCort High School, Johnstown, and Bishop Guilfoyle High School, Altoona. She also served as principal at St. Charles Borromeo in Port Charlotte, FL. Following her studies at St. Louis University, Sister Mary Fides ministered as a Pastoral Minister in various parishes in the Pittsburgh area. From 1985–1989 Sister volunteered on the Food Service Staff at the Motherhouse in Baden. Sister Mary Fides generously offered transportation to the Sisters at the Motherhouse until her retirement in 2005. During that time Sister also ministered for 6 years as Parish Visitor at St. Felix Parish in Freedom, PA. Her contemplative spirit and her desire to share faith with others were blessings to those whose lives she touched. Sister is survived by nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Baden. Friends will be received Sunday from 1:00–8:00 p.m. and Monday from 11:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at the Motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Joseph. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Monday at 4:00 p.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel. Burial will follow in the Sisters’ Cemetery on the Motherhouse grounds. Donations in the name of Sister Mary Fides may be sent to the Sisters of St. Joseph Memorial Fund, St. Joseph Convent, 1020 State St., Baden, PA 15005.
