SISTER MARY PATRICIA LYDON, CSJ, ( Sr. Thomas Aquinas), 79, died Monday, January 7, in Villa St. Joseph in Baden in her 63rd year as a Sister of St. Joseph. The daughter of the late Coleman J. and Mary J. O’Toole Lydon, Sister Mary Patricia entered the Congregation from Annunciation Parish in Pittsburgh.
Sister ministered as a teacher for twenty years in the Pittsburgh, Altoona / Johnstown and Greensburg Dioceses. Her ministries from 1969–1981 included Patient Visitor at Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, DC; Clerical worker at the former St. Canice School, Pittsburgh, Reading Tutor in Title I Program at West End Catholic Consolidation, Johnstown, and Learning Center Coordinator at St. Mary of the Mount School, Pittsburgh. In 1981 Sister began her 15 year ministry as librarian at Mt. Gallitzin Academy in Baden. After retiring in 1996, Sister Mary Patricia served as a volunteer switchboard operator at the Motherhouse and as receptionist at Villa St. Joseph until 2002.
Sister Mary Patricia took delight in her Irish heritage and enjoyed the company of family and friends. Sister is survived by three sisters: Margaret (Peg) and Lester Dunic, Allison Park; Catherine Martuseavich, Ebensburg; and Anne Murphy, Greensburg, nieces and nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews, and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Baden. Friends will be received Wednesday from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Thursday from from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Baden. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. at the Motherhouse. Burial will follow in the Sisters’ Cemetery on the Motherhouse grounds. Donations in the name of Sister Mary Patricia may be sent to the Sisters of St. Joseph Memorial Fund, St. Joseph Convent, 1020 State Street, Baden, PA 15005.
