Sisters Prepare for General Chapter

For several months the Sisters of St. Joseph of Baden have been participating in gatherings, processes and discernment in preparation for our General Chapter which will take place during two sessions this summer.

The Chapter of Affairs will take place from June 18-22 and the Chapter of Elections will take place July 16-20 at our Motherhouse in Baden and will gather Sisters home from all over the country.

Considering the signs of the times, the needs of the Church and world and the resources of the Congregation, the Sisters, at our Chapter of Affairs, will enter into discernment and decision-making about our future directions and the manner in which we are called to be present to the people of God and all creation at this time in our history.

Through a process of both individual and communal discernment, the Sisters, during the Chapter of Elections, will select community members to serve in the ministry of Leadership for the next five years to lead us in our future directions.

Through prayer, study, community meetings, meetings of Corporate Reflection Groups throughout the Congregation and participation in committee work the Sisters have been involved in remote preparation for Chapter since last year.

For religious congregations, Chapters are the highest form of authority and governance and engage the prayer, wisdom and insights of all of the members.

When determining her level of participation in Chapter, each Sister considers her particular circumstances with regard to time, energy and availability for both the preparation for Chapter and the Chapter gathering itself.

Each Sister discerns the particular manner in which she is able to participate in the Chapter and the governance of the Congregation. The discernment of each Sister is then confirmed by the entire Congregation.

Both the preparation for Chapter and the work of Chapter itself require a great deal of time, energy and availability. Those Sisters who are able to commit to the needed preparation and presence at Chapter participate as Deliberative members. Other Sisters who are available for some, but not all of the preparation and Chapter gatherings, participate as Consultative members. And Sisters who are unable to be present for meetings or gatherings participate as Prayerful/Supportive members of the Chapter.

All of the preparations for the Chapter and the work of Chapter itself is done in a spirit of discernment and reliance on the work of the Holy Spirit.

We invite you to pray with and for us as we enter into this privileged and sacred time in our history.
