March 2004
Renovations
Ready for "Walk-Through"
The tools
have changed and so have the tricks of the trade, but the
carpenter Joseph might find himself proud of the women who
bear his name as the renovations to our Motherhouse in Baden
continue to shape and reshape our future.
Sisters
and friends celebrating St. Josephs Day on Saturday,
March 20, will be treated to a special "walk-through"
of the construction areas within the Motherhouse complex.
Prior
to the annual St. Josephs Day liturgy, personnel from
Martini Construction Company, the contractors for the project,
will be on hand between noon and 1:45 p.m. to provide an opportunity
for the sisters and their guests to see first-hand the progress
in parts of the construction areas that can be made safe for
such a "walk through."
Renovations
on portions of the Motherhouse began in October as part of
a multi-million dollar project meant to reconfigure living
and meeting space in the motherhouse in order to better accommodate
current and future needs for housing, ministerial outreach
and development of future ministries.
Following
this first phase of the project a large multi-purpose area
will be available for use by outside groups needing meeting
and gathering space as well as by the sisters. In addition,
the kitchen facilities will be updated and upgraded in order
to provide more efficient work space as well as more efficient
food service for the motherhouse and its guests.
Plumbing,
electrical and heating systems for the entire plant are being
updated and upgraded in this phase in order to position the
buildings for greater and more efficient use in the future
by the sisters as well as ministry and project partners.
While
some of the living space for the sisters is being reconfigured
in this phase of the renovations, the majority of the living
space now provided for the sisters would be renovated and
reconfigured in the second-phase of the project for which
the Sisters of St. Joseph are actively seeking ministry partners.
When the
sisters no longer need the living space at the motherhouse
that is currently needed, the renovated areas of the motherhouse
could be made available to help meet residential needs of
a variety of populations such as elderly persons, single mothers
and those in need of transitional living for a variety of
reasons.
The renovation
project is being funded in part by a short-term bank loan,
some of the Sisters own funds for their retirement and
by a capital campaign scheduled to begin in the near future.
