Sisters Receive Justice Award

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Baden, along with Congregations in Erie and Philadelphia, were honored by The Legislative Initiative to Abolish the Death Penalty (LIADP) in October with its annual Justice Award for the Sisters’ commitment to abolishing the death penalty.

During the event, which was held at Dickinson College, Sisters and guests heard a lecture from Sister Helen Prejean, CSJ, author of "Dead Man Walking," about ongoing problems associated with the death penalty process.

"What a joy it was to listen to Sister Helen speak with such clarity, passion and unassailable good sense," said Joan Anderson, an LIADP representative. "Sister Helen’s ability to advocate for abolishment of the death penalty without minimizing the pain of those who loved the victims is truly inspirational."

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Baden, Erie and Philadelphia are currently collaborating on a moratorium petition campaign for the state of Pennsylvania and are collecting signatures. The Sisters of St. Joseph have a corporate statement against the death penalty and mourn both the victim and the offender when an execution takes place.
