Young at Heart 2009
Raises More than $60,000 for Benevolent Care Fund

On a sunny evening with a beautiful view atop Mt. Washington, generous sponsors, supporters and friends of Villa St. Joseph raised more than $60,000 for charitable care of residents in need.

This year’s event featured special guest The Most Rev. Bishop David A. Zubik of Pittsburgh; entertainment by the Center for Young Musicians; Brigette Sutton and Jessica Scheer, Music Therapists at Villa St. Joseph; live and silent auctions; as well as a "Mystery Box" raffle. Mike Clark, WTAE-TV News Anchor, served as master of ceremonies.

During the program, 230 guests enjoyed a fabulous "surf and turf" dinner prepared by the chefs of LeMont Restaurant. Sister Judith Maroni, Board President, welcomed guests, and Young at Heart Chairwoman Ruth Darragh expressed appreciation for the committee, sponsors, and all who helped make the event a success.

Mary Murray, Executive Director, presented the 2009 Partner in Caring Award to George and Eileen Dorman of Upper St. Clair. The Dormans have been generous supporters of the Villa for more than 10 years. John E. McGrady, Jr.; Sister Francesca Lumpp and George H. Yeckel also were recognized for their long-standing contributions to Villa St. Joseph.

"These individuals have generously given their time, expertise and financial support to Villa St. Joseph over many years, and we are grateful to acknowledge their contributions during this important event," Sister Judith said.

Proceeds from Young at Heart benefit the Benevolent Care Fund at Villa St. Joseph, which provides approximately $400,000 annually to more than 65 percent of its 120 residents.

Founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1997, Villa St. Joseph has a 15-member board of directors, 195 employees and 80 volunteers and auxiliary members. The staff cares for as many as 120 residents at a time and provides long-term nursing care and short-term rehabilitation services for up to 300 people over the course of a year.
