The Sisters of St. Joseph have established a very special charter organization called the St. Joseph Legacy Society. This Society is named for the patron saint of the Sisters of St. Joseph — a man who never spoke a recorded word, but through whose life, the Word of God resonates throughout the world.

In a delightfully written and thoroughly researched book, author Louise Perrotta described Saint Joseph as a man who struggled with the ordinary, yet was chosen to celebrate the extraordinary. Devoutly spiritual and completely dedicated to God's will, Saint Joseph was a carpenter deeply in love with his wife, passionately devoted to his son, and highly skilled in his work.

The St. Joseph Legacy Society formally recognizes ordinary individuals who have taken extraordinary measures to remember the good works of the Sisters of St. Joseph in their will, trust, life insurance gift, or other estate planning arrangement. Members of the St. Joseph Legacy Society will receive the following membership and stewardship benefits:

Invitations to special activities and programs conducted by the Sisters of St. Joseph and their sponsored ministries

Complimentary copy of Louise Perrotta's delightfully written book about the life of Saint Joseph

Annual listing as member of the St. Joseph Legacy Society in our annual report and other publications

Estate planning record book for members to personalize and share with their families and others

Special invitation to attend a Prayer Service and Recognition Dinner to be held at the Motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Joseph at a future date

The Fontbonne Circle has been established to recognize the Sisters of St. Joseph benefactors and to commemorate a remarkable woman.

The Sisters of St. Joseph were founded in LePuy, France, in 1650 to do all the works of mercy of which "woman was capable." Jeanne Fontbonne, born March 31, 1759, entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on July 1, 1778, and was given the name Sister St. John. Appointed the superior at Monistrol, she was a dynamic example to the Sisters of the spirit needed to carry out their good works. Throughout the French Revolution, she held the community together at Monistrol as long as possible, until she was forced to return the Sisters to their parents' homes in 1792. The violence of the Revolution caused all that had grown during the first 150 years to collapse. She returned to her parents’ home where she attempted to continue the mission of the Sisters. As a result, she was arrested and sentenced to the guillotine, but her life was spared because of the fall of Robespierre. She then returned once again to her parents' home.

Thirteen years after the end of the Reign of Terror, Jeanne Fontbonne was summoned by the Cardinal of Lyon, France, and was entrusted with the responsibility of gathering and reorganizing the scattered remnants of the Sisters of St. Joseph as a potent and effective agency that would be entirely for God and for serving the dear neighbor.

Known for her remarkable administrative ability and religious spirit, personal courage, moral fiber, and supreme faith and trust in God, Mother St. John threw herself wholeheartedly into this work. She accomplished this on July 14, 1808, when 12 postulants received the habit and religious names. The Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Lyons had just been restored.

The Fontbonne Circle, named in honor of this remarkable woman, formally recognizes those whose cumulative lifetime gifts to the Sisters of St. Joseph and their ministries have reached $10,000.00.

Members of the Fontbonne Circle will receive the following membership and stewardship benefits:

A permanent nameplate on The Fontbonne Circle Plaque

An invitation to The Fontbonne Circle induction ceremony and reception
and an engraved symbol of membership

Acknowledgment as a member of The Fontbonne Circle in the report to benefactors published at least every other year

Invitations to special programs and retreats
