Sister Gemma Godeck, CSJ, 99, died Friday, May 2, 2014, at the Motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Joseph in the 81st year of her religious life. The daughter of the late John J. and Teresa Rose Dular Sister Gemma entered the Congregation from Assumption Parish in Bellevue, PA.
Sister ministered as an educator for more than 50 years in the Dioceses of Pittsburgh, Greensburg, Altoona/Johnstown, Atlanta, GA, and Columbus, OH. During these years as an elementary teacher, Sister Gemma served at Holy Rosary, Pittsburgh from 1940-1946, St. Paul of the Cross, Atlanta, GA from 1961-1968, Assumption, Bellevue from 1969-1977 and St. Andrew, Columbus, OH from 1977-1983.
Sister Gemma shared her artistic talent and creativity through her paintings and gardening. Some 200 of Sister’s paintings were sold at the Sisters’ annual festival. She also designed various religious cards while residing at Our Lady of Fatima, Hopewell, and later at the Motherhouse.
She greeted others with a twinkle in her eye and a contagious smile. Sister is survived by her community, the Sisters of St. Joseph. Friends will be received Sunday, May 4 from 1 to 8 p.m. and Monday, May 5, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Joseph.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Monday at 4:00 p.m. Burial will follow in the Sisters’ Cemetery on the Motherhouse grounds. Donations in the name of Sister Gemma may be sent to the Sisters of St. Joseph Memorial Fund, St. Joseph Convent, 1020 State Street, Baden, PA 15005.
