Late last night, three of our Sisters stood in solidarity with about 50 neighbors in Ambridge to speak out about the unjust treatment of immigrants. They gathered in response to ICE and law enforcement taking immigrants into custody and witnessed at least one man heartbreakingly separated from his family and young children.
“These are human beings, made in the image of God, who deserve the same love, respect, and dignity that we all do,” said Sister Jean Uzupis, congregational moderator, after learning of the situation. “No one deserves the discrimination, cruelty, or inhumane treatment that immigrants are experiencing.”
“Like so many of our neighbors, they simply want a safe and fulfilling life for their families. They are caring and hardworking individuals who strengthen the Ambridge community and enrich our entire region.”
As disturbing scenes of immigrant families being terrorized continue to unfold across the country, we stand in solidarity with those who are suffering, and we will continue to speak out about the injustices they face. We condemn this cruelty, and we wholeheartedly reject every false narrative that portrays law-abiding immigrants as “illegals”, “criminals”, or “problematic”.
We take seriously the Gospel call to welcome the stranger, love our neighbors, and care for the most vulnerable among us. If you, too, are disheartened by the unjust treatment of our immigrant brothers and sisters, we urge you to support Casa San José and to stand up for your neighbors.
