“I wanted my life to be about more than just me, and I knew I couldn’t do it alone,” Sister Kari Pohl says of the pull she felt toward religious life. She recalls first meeting Sisters of St. Joseph during her time as a nursing student at the University of Detroit Mercy in her home state of Michigan. “What drew me to this community in particular was the joy and love that the Sisters had – and continue to have – toward each other.”
Serving as a nurse at the East Liberty Family Health Care Center has allowed Sister Kari to care for her patients’ physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing – and to see the systemic injustices they carry the weight of each day, something she also observed during a 6-year mission in Nicaragua, accompanying people experiencing extreme poverty. Through her ministry as Congregational Coordinator of Justice and Peace, she transforms that awareness into action, working to end exploitation across systems and relationships.
Authentic, appreciative, and justice-seeking, Sister Kari enjoys reading, walking in nature, photography, and painting.
