Sister Mary Dennis Donovan, Catholic Action, and Human Relations in the Diocese of Pittsburgh

February 1, 2022 By Sisters of St. Joseph

Sister Mary Dennis Donovan developed a pilot program, Project Understanding, for adults in local parishes to learn about black history and the black experience and to discuss ways to respond to the needs of the times.

“Racism denies the unity and solidarity of the human race as God created it.”

As Black History Month begins, we recall these words of Sister Mary Dennis Donovan in “The Responsible Citizen,” a textbook she co-authored more than 50 years ago.

As a student at St. Louis University, she theorized that “when we really understand the oneness of the human race, we lose prejudice, our desire to dominate others, to exploit others, to win at the expense of others.”

Read about Sister Mary Dennis’ life and remarkable contributions to Catholic Action and human relations in the Diocese of Pittsburgh, from the late 1940s through the early 1970s, as chronicled by Archivist Kathleen Washy.
