Why did our chickens cross the Motherhouse road? To get to Faith. Field. Feast.!

July 30, 2025 By Sisters of St. Joseph

We’re excited to share this important message from Ms. Stella Blue Chicken, one of our Motherhouse hens who hopes to see you at Faith. Field. Feast. this year!

I tried to keep it a secret, but my girls just love to squawk! Our friend, Emily, Food Security & Farm Coordinator for the Sisters of St. Joseph, has taken me under her wing and given me a very special assignment this summer: inviting the humans to our home here in Baden for what she tells me is a “farm-to-table” dinner.

Faith. Field. Feast. is what it’s called, and she says many of you may have joined us before! Perhaps we’ve even met! My name is Stella Blue, and Emily says I’m a Black Australorp, which sounds pretty fancy, just like my feathers that shine and shimmer with hints of blue and green in the sunlight.

Cluckily enough, I live here with my fine, feathered sisters and we get to help feed the kind, human Sisters who share this land with us. We also get to feed our dear neighbors in the area who don’t have enough to eat when Emily brings our eggs to local food pantries. Thinking about that makes me sad, because we never go to bed hungry and we don’t want anyone else to either. How can we do the things God intends for us to do and be who we were created to be if we can’t meet this most basic of need?

That’s why we’re so happy to know people like you: the helpers. The ones who care. The ones who can see the bigger peck-ture and realize that we’re all connected – each one of us a sacred creation of God. Emily tells us that Faith. Field. Feast. is even more fun than our nightly dinners here in the run, with live bluegrass music, delicious local fare, and time to explore this beautiful place we call home.

Even better: the dinner raises tens of thousands of dollars to support the Sisters’ ecology ministry. That includes our flock, our bee buddies at the apiary, the many humans who tend the community gardens and donate a portion of their harvest to our neighbors in need, and the Sister St. Mark Garden Fund that helps people across our region start and sustain gardens in their own neighborhoods. It’s very egg-citing to be part of making things better, just by sharing what God gives us.

My girls and I would be so happy to see you again this year! You can RSVP or become a sponsor or patron here.

Thank you for your eggs-traordinary compassion and generosity. We’re clucky to know you!

Featherfully Yours,

Stella Blue

P.S. Please don’t wait too long to get your tickets – Emily says they always sell out!

About the Author

Stella Blue is a one-year-old Black Australorp, a sweet and docile hen who enjoys foraging for bugs, grass, and seeds with her sisters. A curious girl who is high in the pecking order, Stella’s name was inspired by a Grateful Dead song, one she hopes to play one day on the xylophone in the run.

When she’s not flexing her philanthropic feathers as a writer, Stella is contributing medium-size, light brown eggs to the dozens her sisters produce each month. Over the course of a year, she can produce as many as 280 eggs. She keeps her strength up with a healthy diet peppered with her favorite treats: tomatoes, blackberries, grapes, and melon rinds. You may find Stella napping in the shade on a hot summer day or being the first to trot out of the coop to greet visitors.
