Sisters to Receive Shon D. Owens, Sr. Diversity Award from Beaver County Chamber of Commerce

October 29, 2024 By Sisters of St. Joseph

The Beaver County Chamber of Commerce award recognizes groups living the values of inclusion and respect for all people

A man of “deep and active faith” and a dear friend of our Sisters, the memory and legacy of the late Minister Shon D. Owens continues to guide our steps us toward building an more inclusive, loving, and just world for every dear neighbor.

Shon Owens and Sister Mary Pellegrino greet one another during an Undivided in Christ gathering at the Motherhouse in Baden in 2019.

A co-founder of Undivided in Christ, an interfaith network of people working for racial justice and healing, Shon “inspired us through his efforts to enact the prayer of his (and our) Savior, that ‘all may be one’ (John 17:21),” Sister Sarah Crotty shared in a tribute last year, pledging to honor his good work by “standing with the other many lives he touched and continuing his legacy of working toward unity and equity in Beaver County and beyond.”

Undivided in Christ leaders Shon Owens, John Pusateri, Rev. Marvin Moreland, and Sister Sarah Crotty help to hold the Beaver County Community & Law Enforcement’s Unity Pledge signed by hundreds of our neighbors in Beaver County during a walk for peace and justice in the wake of George Floyd’s murder in the summer of 2020.

Sister Sarah, in her role as Community Outreach Coordinator, as well as many other Sisters continue to build bridges, strengthen relationships and reach out through Undivided in Christ, as well as many other outreaches that allow us to be present to our dear neighbors from all racial and ethnic backgrounds, particularly those on the margins.

Shon Owens speaks to a coalition of faith and community leaders gathered at the Beaver County Courthouse during “Unity Week” in 2022.

Always seeking to meet the needs of our times, Sisters are grateful to be part of coalitions working to end racism, human trafficking, and gun violence, protect our environment, support our most vulnerable neighbors, welcome immigrants and refugees, and invite all those who share our desire for a more peaceful and loving world into deeper relationship with God and one another.

Shon Owens is pictured with Beaver Falls Mayor Kenya Johns, members of the Beaver County Community & Law Enforcement Coalition, Beaver County Commissioner Jack Manning, members of Undivided in Christ and Dr. Don Sheffield, a dear friend of our Sisters and co-founder of the Unity Choir, which our Sisters and friends participate in to help spread uplifting messages of hope.

We are honored to receive this award bearing Shon’s name and to be part of our local Chamber of Commerce network, where lasting relationships are formed through service to others.
